I made my nephews some Toy Story ginger bread cookies. I wasn't very happy with them myself, but they loved them - particularly the Buzz ones. I was happy with just one cookie I made... and that is the Finn cookie from Adventure Time up the top. I drew the face on with some lovely textas (with edible ink) my beautiful wife bought me for my birthday. I've got a long way to go with cookies.

So I have an exam tomorrow... I really should be studying. Anyway, I thought I would try draw 10 Julia's in 10 minutes. Here they are - some better than others. Some I wasn't going to include but wheres the fun in that? All the drawing was done in under 10 minutes. It probably took closer to 15 minutes by the time I did the colouring. I really should get back to studying.

Here is my second attempt a Domestic Cowboy Cookies. Perhaps not what I hoped, but getting there. Note: black icing sugar. Again, time was a problem... but my real enemy this time was consistency... that is icing sugar consistency. It either came out too fast and ran and was drippy, or came out too slow and was stiff and lumpy. So that is something to work on. My wife suggests that they look better when they have less colours, and are more simple. Perhaps she's right. They taste awesome b.t.w.

I made these for a friends farewell party... perhaps she likes Twilight, and perhaps I was trying to make an Edward cookie. Perhaps a little ambitious.

Some kind of rat girl

So this is Ratgirl. Well, perhaps this version is called ‘some kind of rat girl’. The story of some kind of rat girl is as follows. A friend, who we will call Miriam to conceal her identity, wrote on her facebook wall something like she didn’t think Ratgirl would be a very good superhero. This spiralled out of control as Scott turned this idea into a character. He drew the very first (or one of the very first) Ratgirl in my sketchbook. This spiralled further out of control when I drew a very clay-styled copy of Scott’s drawing. This even further span out of control when I kept drawing her, but making her more domestic cowboy flavoured. Anyway, turns out there are infinity parallel universes, and Ratgirl exists in at least two. Scott’s Ratgirl is very cool… a hell of a lot more realistic. You can see Scott’s Ratgirl designs here.

Above is just a few sketches to try and work her out – not attempting anything special or nothing… just trying to get a better idea of what I want her to look like. I was also giving her a go with the brush pen to see if I could get some nice inking going. I learnt 3 things in this little drawing exercise.

1) A light box may be holding me back. I drew these with pencils on a tablecloth… without any light-box. I felt like I drew better if I just gave it one shot, rather than if I drew it, placed another piece of paper over the top, tried to improve it, place another piece of paper on top… etc. This is something I had been taught to do in animation school… but maybe that’s something more for Disney animators.

2) Using a line of action might be holding me back. Another thing I learnt in animation school is to draw all characters using a line of action… a line that tells the characters inner emotions or something like this. Again, I think this was probably really helpful to Disney animators, but perhaps it’s giving me awkward characters. In the above drawing… the two girls on the right were drawn with a line of action, the two on the left weren’t. I think I’ve spent years trying to force a line of action into my characters. Perhaps the line of action may be one of those ‘toys for the grown ups’ and just something I shouldn’t play with. Fun fact: the two drawings on the left actually have a line of action, I just didn’t draw one in.

3) Brush pens may actually be the inking tool after all. I love the idea of brush pens. They just make sense. I’ve spent year trying to use them with no luck, but tonight they’ve worked well. Maybe this is because I haven’t been trying to use them on my lightbox where my hand sticks to the glass… or maybe because I always am to scared to ink strait onto my pencil drawing so I do it on a new piece of paper, and again it’s the lightboxes fault.

I guess I’m a slow learner.

Here are a few colour’s I was quickly playing with. Maybe that brushed style is something I should be going for.

On a slightly related note, there’s this ‘myth’ going around that a good character design must have a clear, defined, unique, instantly recognisable silhouette. If you have two characters in the same show that have a similar silhouette you should crawl in a hole and never come out. Every character designer preaches this as if it’s some pearl of wisdom handed down from guru to guru. I think it’s a load of Hogwarts. Why? Well that’s just it… why? Why does every character need a unique silhouette? Is it because the audience can tell characters apart? No… does anyone watch the Simpsons and get way confused whenever Homer, Barney or Krusty are in the same shot? On my goodness… this show makes no sense… Krusty is talking to Barney and I just don’t understand anything. Is it because it makes for more interesting characters? No… it just makes a miss-mash of random shaped people who don’t look like they should be on the same planet together (have a look at homestarrunner). Is it because it is helpful in setting up the scene… layout… framing all that? No… there is no reason why you can’t set up any situation well… if you just stand similarly shilloette characters next to each other without thinking… then maybe it’s helpful to have random blobs… but that’s not a character design fault. I assume this was just something someone said once and no one challenged it and it sounded like it could be right so people keep saying it. Anyway, this is trivial so no need to listen or even understand… this is just 2am babble.

In Christianity, if a guy wants to be a preacher or a pastor but can't preach and is terrible with people, often people subtly suggest he should become an academic theologian. I think I can't draw and am not any good with animation... so perhaps I should become an academic cartoonogian. Once again... 2am babble.

I drew the background of this first, using a 'home and garden' magazine as a guide. Then added the people. I'm happy with all the guys in this photo - they are all funny and odd looking. The girls... well... I can't really draw girls.

I drew round eyes with pupils, which I don't often do. It makes them look like Rugrats drawings. I again had troubles with the colouring, the lines and all that... It looked better on my darker laptop than my bright iMac.

Tonight I went to a mad birthday party for my mate Jimbo. Happy Birthday Jimbo! He designated a wall in his garage for graffiti. I always wanted to do some graffiti but don't believe in it in its illegal form, so I was pretty excited to get to try it. Turns out its a lot harder than I expected!

The bunny turned out to look a bit evil... so I called him death bunny.

Zine launch

Domestic Cowboy - I could have been so many things... was launched with a BANG! Thanks to Andy for the song. It will live on forever in our hearts... and longer on the internet.

I was inspired by Sugar Belle to make some ginger bread for the launch. They worked OK but it was a very rushed job (with both cutting out the shapes and icing). Also we didn't have enough icing sugar. Lessons learnt... next time I'm allowing 4 hours to cut out the shape and cook them; 4 hours to ice them. All in all... it wasn't as hard as I'd imagined... and I feel that with a bit of practice I could make some pretty awesome ginger bread cookies.

This is my beautiful wife eating the bunny. :)

And people generally enjoying the picnic.

In the Kitchen

A background I am much happier about. I'm still not sure what I'm doing when it comes to colouring and using photoshop, but I picked up a few tips. I did this one in pen, rather than pencil, which I think is a much better line to work with. This is our kitchen, which is the same room as the last background I drew.

These sketches were done as me and my wife were traveling around europe. Twas lots of fun!

Tonight I decided I would try and draw a complete scene... I never draw a whole scene - that is, characters in a background. I always only draw characters standing on white space or photo shop them onto a photo. I do this because (1) I'm lazy and (2) I can't really draw... and drawing backgrounds is hard. Anyway... this is tonights attempt. Surprisingly, I found drawing the background easier than expected... but the problem was line-work, scanning and photoshop. Any tips? I think my biggest problem was not bothering to work out the scanning software and I got a bad scan... anyway... It's a start... I'll keep trying.

PS. This is our 'lounge room' (and kitchen).

PPS. My Wacom is dying... it has been for about 12 months :( Only works sometimes.

Almost finished my Zine! It's the first 100% domestic cowboy zine ever! It compiles all of the domestic cowboy comic strips, some artworks and even a couple of things that can't be seen anywhere else. It will be 32 pages of full colour magic. I have one more page to finish off, and then write the self indulgent intro, and then off to the printers. Yay!

The King - Meritocracy

This was filmed in September last year under the house where I was living. Right now this house in flooded in the Brisbane Floods (12/1/11). I was going to wait and upload these in order (this is episode 2) but the floods made me inpatient, and also I thought people might like the distraction today. This was very fun to make! We had a ball the night we filmed it and I enjoyed editing it on our new iMac.

This project was just a test... to see if it would work, and how it would happen. I want to see if our local community TV channel want us to make a show for them.

Problems:

-It was quite hard to convince people that this was worth trying to attempt; mainly because I'm bad at communicating my ideas. People were happy to help... but perhaps didn't know what I was trying to do.

-Filming with 3 cameras (ps. Thanks Alisdair Harden, Andrew Morphy and Scott Levick for their cameras) we had problems with uploading them and getting all the different files to work together.

-One of the camera's died during filming... in this episode actually... you may be able to notice.

-Not having internet doesn't help.

Successes:

-I was very impressed at how good everyone was in front of the camera! Well done y'all!

-3 camera set up worked a treat (or could work a treat)

-Was heaps fun!

Overall I'm very happy with what came out...

Would you believe its been about 2 years since the last Domestic Cowboy? Surprise!! I may redraw the lady in this comic because she looks weird.

Below are some paintings I did that were auctioned off at some church-type event. Alot of paint was used on the the painting of the girl. This was because I kept wreaking and trying to fix it.

It's probably obvious, but the painting below was a very cool series of accidents.

I just noticed that I have never put this up on my blog. This is the first 'proper' animation project I ever worked on. I didn't do much of it but it was fun. Imagine 4 or 5 guys squished into a tiny basement of an old house. Computers and wires everywhere, one wall was dirt. I don't remember too much of what went on... but I do remember alot of incense and poker. I did the littler things the little yellow thing and the angry brown things.

On Saturday I tried to have a Youtube collaboration day at my place. The idea was to get my friends together and in 12 hours make a Youtube clip based on whatever skills and ideas people brought with them. Unfortunately none of my friends shared the enthusiasm I did... except for a few who couldn't make it the whole time due to other things. So nothing of greatness came forth. What did come forth is this Yak... which was drawn by Bec-O'Brien... and animated by me. SDAL got some teddy bears to fight him and he filmed it which should be rad if we can get it off the camera (we are having quite a bit of trouble). We did have fun and alot of sushi.

Morals of the story:

-Don't make your Youtube day a social event. Its for people who want to make films, not someone who wants to play risk (which has its time and place).
-Make sure everyone is going to be there on time, for the whole time and be enthusiastic.
-Have it organised long in advance.
-Don't have Flash and Live Action in the one day... Either Flash or Film. They are different arts... that require different attentions.
-Perhaps make it a competition?
-Don't go to Sushi train (in someone else's car).
-Have the event more mobile... In a car... going from location to location (if filming).
-Make it iPhone free.

So what's going on here the camera is set to long exposure and then a touch is used to draw the picture in the air. It's had for 3 main reasons; you have 16 seconds; you're drawing in the air with no point of of reference; has to be done in the dark. Above: a domestic cowboy rabbit.

Why hello there! I guess its been a few months...

I've given up the comics for Scene magazine; I just can't find the time at the moment. I will continue to draw comics when they come to me but don't hold your breath. I've been 'working' on a Zine - "Domestic Cowboy's Guide to Brisbane". So far its been more talk than work but its coming along. Above is a picture I drew for it - Scott, Gav and a domestic cowboy character having $4 breakfast at Ric's in the valley. Could there be a better way to spend a morning? I could think of a worse way - ending a 24 hour animation.

Above is a few shots from a cartoon I did with my crazy Tasmanian animation buddies on a crazy 24 hour animation. In the last year I have done two 24 hour 'challenges' and if I ever try and do one ever again remind me that I hate them. I don't really hate them... I have a lot of fun for the first few hours but by the 12th I want to shoot myself. The fun part is the no-rules animation. You don't gotta listen to no one (apart from the rest of your team) but if you don't wanna care about any of those animation 'rules' that some idiot made up you don't gotta. In your face Tex Avery!

I did the animation on this... and the voice of the crazy guy.Hung , quite impressively, did the voice of the other serious guy, and drew the props and backgrounds. Air animated the background. The character design was a combination of Markus, Tim, Beale, Hung and myself - as was the concept. I miss all those guys and others from Tassie. That's something Brisbane just doesn't have.

So I have given up Animation, moved to Brisbane, and enrolled in Uni. I'm doing Social Science at UQ. No more Blue Rocket, no more Pixel Pinkie, no more Nina and Anni, no more Principal Baple and Miss Domingo. So sad. Well not entirely. I have a few weeks part time. Anyway, a guy called Paul Newell is famous for inventing Fatso for Roy and HG... he worked on Pixel Pinkie and drew many these cool pictures during work... (click the picture for a bigger version)

So after spending a million dollars on CS4 I decided I better use it... So I did the linework for this comic in Illistrator and then coloured it in Photoshop. Whats the go with illistrator? I think it would be easier to draw in excel. Heres hoping that i'm just not used to it and as I get used to it it will be easyier. Anyway can you tell the difference between this drawing and the other ones?

Tasmania's street press, Sauce magazine have started publishing my comics. Scene magazine in Brisbane print my comic really, really small, which is fine... but I have to try make sure everything is big enough so people can read and understand it. (Also I could care a little less about finer quality details)... But now Sauce magazine have decided to go in the Guinness book of records for printing the largest comics ever. They print it at 25.5cm ... Scene print at 11cm. And if you understand squared space or cubed or whatever a rectangle is (which I don't) it's a significant difference. Not that theres a problem with printing it that big... its just big. And it makes it look more childish than usual. Speaking of childish...

24 hour comic book day

I just killed myself by doing the 24 hour comic book day challange. The idea is to do 24 pages of comics in 24 hours. And here's what I did:
I wont upload the comic cause its not very good. I gave myself a 4/10 for the comic. This was mainly because I was lazy and didn't care to much. As soon as I got tired (about an hour after it started) my care level just went. So I had 4 hours sleep in that time and watched 2001: a space Odyssey... so I wasn't putting my all into it, But that's ok... It's always about the journey and not the destination or something like that right? I had fun doing it at Hung's and it was awesome to watch how he illustrates (blog link on the right).

So here is the cover of the new Alpha Llama Llama magazine (I think)... It should be in all good bookstores in a few weeks (that is maybe Ace comics and Rocking horse which are both not book stores) The coloured bit is a photo stapled onto the front and the rest is just normal photo copy. Pretty cool hey? Here are some more 'artworks' I did for the zine.

And here are some photos where some of my art were in a art show. How upperclass. I wont tell you that the art show was in a tiny office space and no one went to it...

J. K. Rowling talks to her husband

"Darling, I'm so glad that all this Harry Potter madness is over. I am so sick of writing about Hogwarts and Gryffindor and Ron Weasley and everything. And because I have made us rich we can just enjoy the rest of our lives. Although the occasional media interview regarding old Harry will probably be unavoidable, and we will have to go see the Harry Potter films as they come out. Hey, we should buy a yacht! Or a helicopter, and go visit all the castles in the world, although I doubt any of them will be half as exciting as Hogwarts. That is the problem with my imagination; nothing in real life is as exciting as what I wrote in Harry Potter. The football is so boring compared to Quidditch. School aren't as exciting as Hogwarts. Horses aren't as exciting as invisible horse things. The town drunk is not as exciting as Hagrid or Dumbledor. Oh how my life would be different without Hogwarts or Harry Potter."

"What are you talking about honey?" said J. k. Rowling's husband looking up from his newspaper. "Who on earth is Harry Potter? And what in the world is a Hogwart? The football isn't as exciting as what? Your looney woman! As if we could ever afford a yacht. We can't even afford our car. I swear your crazy. Harry Potter... My goodness!" J. K. Rowling's husband did not know whether to be amused or worried by his wife. He continued to drink his tea and read his newspaper.

Gibberish

I knew a guy who would only speak in gibberish.

He once said to me:"Oirb kar farndwar susn. Dardry fecle sisk dun hark"

What that man said made more sense than anything I ever heard.

It made more sense than my parents.

It made more sense than all my teachers and mentors.

It made more sense than politicians and world leaders.

That man knew what he was talking about.

Moses

It just so happened that I invented a time machine. I'm rather clever you see. So I get together a few of the delights of modern day living... a few things like a cigarette lighter and a game boy and I go back to the time of Moses. Moses wasn't hard to find. I greeted him and had a bit of a chat. He said I had a funny accent. Then I whipped out my modern day magic and showed it all off. He wasn't very impressed. It's kind of hard to impress Moses. That guy's seen a bit in his time.

The music boy

Once a child was born with a rather strange oddity. His ears played music. Everyone loved the musical boy. He would always sharing lovely music making everyone happy. There was never a dull moment around the boy whose ears played music. What a wonderful boy was the boy who shared music. Everyone loved him until the day he went deaf and the music stopped.

Why the long face

"A horse walked into a bar and the bartender said… "Why the long face?"" Then the evolutionist guy tells me why a horse has a long face. The evolutionist guy has no sense of humour. He's no fun to be around.

Flowers

In a non-fantasy world, the same world you and I live in, Todd was in love. He had been in love for almost two and a half years but had never told 'her'. He wanted to win her heart but never knew how. One day he worked it out. He learnt how to blow bubbles into shape other than the round ones we are all used to. He learnt to blow square bubbles and triangle bubbles and star bubbles. The challenge was to blow flower shaped bubbles which he mastered after quite a long time. He would give her bubbles shaped like flowers. He got up the courage and brought a bubble bouquet to her door. He knocked and waited for and instant or forever until she answered. He gave the flowers to her but she was very unenthusiastic. Flowers are kind of cliché and over done. Girls aren't impressed by flowers anymore.
